This is a montage of the best shots I got while watching the Childs Glacier calving on July 21-22.

The sound does not do justice for what we were hearing. It was loud as thunder with cracks like gunshots. The other noise you will hear is the ever present rain on the microphone.

The Childs Glacier is roughly 300 feet high and 1/4 mile away from us. If you take that into account you can figure out how big some of the blocks are and how high the splashes go.

Some splashes go up about 150 feet and some go out as much as 200 feet, with debris ( some the size of small cars) flying much farther. It al depended on how the ice presented itself to the water. Often, with the big ones that came from up high, the ground under our feet bounced up and down like a big earthquake.

It was a great thing to see in person and we were only joined by 3-4 other people the whole time, so no tourist rush to jostle with.
