Here is another in the garbage truck video series.

This video captures several types of garbage and recycling trucks in action and highlights the hard working sanitation engineers that provide this very important service.

Recycling material is normally placed in wheeled plastic bins with blue lids and any additional recycling material can be placed in transparent blue plastic bags and placed next to the collection bins. Trucks with mechanical arms will collect the bins but, the collection of the excess bagged recycling is a much more labour intensive process and required a sanitation worker hanging off the back of the truck to do the collection duties. In this video, the resident probably had 8 - 10 bags of recycling which were likely very light as the sanitation worker was able to carry 6 or more bags in one trip.

Yard waste is placed in brown paper bags and also put to the curb for collection. This is also a manual process requiring a sanitation worker to pick up and toss the bags into the rear hopper of the truck. Fortunately the bags in this video were not very heavy and they were easily tossed into the truck. In some cases, the bags are so heavy that they start tearing apart when an attempt is made to pick them up.

Garbage is placed in plastic bins with grey lids and many cities charge extra for excess bags placed to the curb. Often the residents are required to purchase special tags ($2 each) and place these tags on the bags dropped to the curb. Excess garbage will not be picked up if they are untagged except on special garbage exemption days. On these days, residents are allowed to place "unlimited" garbage to the curb and the collection process is long and hard for the sanitation workers.
