Jasuli Devi was born in 1805 in the village of Dantu in Uttarakhand’s Darma valley. Jasuli Devi, also known as Jasuli Shaukyani, hailed from the village of Dantu in the Darma valley. Her wealth was immense, but her life had been marked by tragedy—her husband had passed away, and she had lost her only young son. Overwhelmed by grief and a sense of purposelessness, Jasuli Devi took to casting her wealth, consisting of silver coins, into the river.

Word of her actions spread throughout the town. Sir Henry Ramsay, the Kumaon Commissioner at the time, learned about Jasuli Devi and her wealth during his visit to the area. Sir Ramsay persuaded her to channel her resources to benefit her community members, particularly those trading across various locations. Thus, establishing dharmshalas (rest houses) emerged from their discussions, leaving a lasting legacy of compassion and service in the region.
