UPI reported: "Middleweight contender Rubin (Hurricane) Carter finished stronger Saturday night to win an upset, split 10-round decision over George Benton that snapped Benton's winning streak at nine straight in their nationally televised fight at MSG. Carter suffered minor cuts on both brows, but came on to land the most punches in the 9th round and to stagger Benton in the 10th."
