On the 15th of May, 2019, the Kingdom of Erusea declared war on the Osean Federation. This conflict is the focus of the story of Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown.

Prior, Osea constructed a space elevator on the Usean continent to assist with rebuilding after the Ulysses disaster and the previous Continental War. The government of Erusea believed Osea was exploiting the continent and Erusea, ultimately culminating in the kingdom capturing the space elevator as well as the two Arsenal Birds defending the elevator.

Ace Combat 7 explores the theme of drone warfare and different perspectives. Unmanned aerial vehicles constantly show up mission after mission. They are a major element of the story. The story is told from various perspectives, from an allied mechanic, to the leader of the enemy, to the scientist behind the drones. Newscasts also play in the cutscenes and during gameplay, giving the player a glimpse into how different media outlets portray events.
