Bio media, is it the right type of filtration for your aquarium? Bio filtration is needed in the aquarium, but do we really need to dive into bio media. I run a lot of tank, and the only one which has bio media is the 125, that has a fluval fx6, the only reason i have bio media in there is because it came with it, so i might as well use it. So my point is, my other tanks don't use bio media, and are thriving just well. The aquarium hobby, or pet keeping didn't have bio media at one point, your substrate was your bio media. All depending on your application, adding bio media can be a great thing, or can be uncalled for. If you run a bare bottom tank, its a great idea to use some bio media, so your beneficial bacteria has something to adhere to. but f you have a tank that is well established, there might not be any need for it. Also keep it in perspective, if you have a tank with 5 fully grow angel fish, you don't need a 55 gallon barrel to run k1, you have to have the amount of bacteria to the amount of bioload, the bacteria won't colonize over the amount of waste being produced. if you are using biomedia in bags in a canister filter, hang on the back filter, or a sump, make sure its getting proper water flow, and make sure you clean it under aquarium water to free it from detritus build up. but using media bags is a good thing since you can just switch a bag to a new tank and use it as a quarantine tank, a hospital, or maybe even a fry tank. what this video is about, is the fact that we need to slow down and think why are we doing certain things to our aquariums, are we seeing what others have done, and have had success with it, and trying to mimic that result, or are we actually getting down to it and figuring out how and why things work the way that they do. Bio media might be the way for you. I will say, in my koi pond i have a trash can full of peagravel and on the bottom sits a big air stone, air gets pushed through all of that gravel, and water travels with it, passing through the gravel, acting as my bio filter. but i used that option since i went bare bottom in that pond
