Winter sowing is a very easy and cost effective way to start seeds. If you have a milk jug or 2-liter bottle, you have the perfect greenhouse in which to plant your seeds. And the best part? You can do it in the middle of winter and let Mother Nature take it from there. No need for grow lights and all that other stuff one might need for indoor seed starting.

In the video, I plant Ascelpias tuberosa (butterfly weed) and Eryngium (sea holly) but there are many other seeds that respond well to winter sowing. If the back of your seed packet mentions anything about a cold treatment, perfect! If not, try it anyway and see what happens. Seeds are cheap and you'll learn something along the way!

Here are a few other seeds that respond well to winter sowing:
Aster
Liatris
Columbine
Coneflower
Foxglove
Delphihium
Hollyhock
Goldenrod
Rudbeckia
Yarrow
Veronica

Hi there! My name is Heather and I garden in zone 5b in the southwest suburbs of Chicago on a small residential lot. My garden lives a whole lot larger than it is and I love sharing tips and tricks, as well as plenty of mistakes, with others who love to play in the dirt.
