For a player who wants to be a complete shooter, being able to shoot on the move is a crucial skill to master. The ability to shoot on the move can create more shot opportunities for a shooter. Why?

Relocating off the ball can make it easier for your teammates to see you; It can also create better passing angles so they can get the ball to you! Being able to shoot on the move will allow your coach to run more plays for you to get shots!!! If you’re gonna be shooting off a screen, you’re gonna be shooting on the move.

Some of these shots are off of set plays, while others are off of a player reacting to what’s happening on the floor. Think about this - if you relocate while your defender is helping off of you or ball watching, you’ll no longer be in the spot where they think you are. By the time the defender checks back in on you, you’ve vanished! This is a great way to get an open shot opportunity.

IMO, you’re not a true catch & shoot threat until you can shoot on the move. Shooting on the move is a definitely different rhythm than a stand still catch & shoot shot. In this video, you’ll notice a lot of variety in the types of shots taken: what direction the player is moving, where he gets the pass from, how far he has to move before the shot, the footwork he uses to get into the shot, & how much space/time he has to shoot. You should vary all of these factors when you practice… don’t just work on the same exact shot the same exact way a thousand times in a row. Add in variability!
