Facing the sea, with spring blossoms by Hai Zi [English lyrics]
Haizi, whose original name was Zha Haisheng, was born on March 24, 1964, in Zha Bay Village, Gaoge Town, Huaining County, Anhui Province. He grew up in the countryside and entered the Law Department of Peking University at the age of 15 in 1979. Haizi began writing poetry in 1982 and was later known as one of the "Three Poets of Peking University." Tragically, on March 26, 1989, he committed suicide by laying on the railway tracks at Shanhaiguan, at the young age of 25. Throughout his brief life as a poet, Haizi maintained a pure heart. Though he was long misunderstood by the world, Haizi was a poet who fervently pursued the limits of literature and life, becoming a significant figure in the history of new Chinese literature in the 1980s.

This poem uses concise yet heartfelt language to depict the genuine and kind heart of a poet. The poet yearns to be "a happy person," wishing to share his happiness with everyone, including strangers. The world in the poem is full of vitality, and each line exudes positive and uplifting emotions.

The sea is the core image of the poem, symbolizing vastness and vitality, serving as the poet's spiritual haven and a place of true happiness. "Facing the sea, with spring blossoms" may seem like a mirage, but it represents a vivid sense of happiness in the poet's heart. This image breaks through the constraints of reality, reflecting the poet's persistent pursuit of ideals. The material needs of the real world—feeding horses, chopping wood, traveling the world—are merely to sustain life and keep the heart beating and imagination soaring.

The poem has two systems: one describing the efforts to create happiness in mundane life, and the other expressing blessings for others. From "strangers, I also bless you" to "may lovers become spouses," it shows a heart full of compassion. The first part, "I have a house facing the sea, with spring blossoms," is full of anticipation for a happy life, while the second part, involving relationships with others, reveals inner conflicts and contradictions. In his hopes for the world, the poet returns to his reality, acknowledging that only "facing the sea, with spring blossoms" is true happiness.

Each stanza ends with "I," showing a transition from possession to sharing and returning. Although actions fade, the beauty of the soul remains, even if earthly happiness is not achieved. The sorrow in the poem lies not in current unhappiness but in the abandonment of the future. "Only wish" represents an acceptance of present reality but also implies a denial of the future.

In the end, the poem portrays a cycle within the inner world, moving from embracing the external world to returning to the self, intertwining reality and ideal, showcasing the poet's complex and profound emotions.
