SHIKOTSU-TOYA National Park" Noboribetsu Jigokudani"(Hell Valley)
Designated as National Park 1949, Area: 99,302 ha
The park area of Lake Shikotsu covers some 99,473 hectares and extends to Lake Toya's two major caldera lakes.
The park is indeed an awesome topographic display; the volcanic forms of Mt. Youtei, Mt. Usu, Mt. Showa Shin-zan, and Mt.Tarumae-zan dominate the landscape spectacularly.
Visitors to the area are witness to extensive volcanic activity, with various hot springs and sulfuric acid steaming majestically throughout the park.
Mt.Usu, in particular, puts on a grand show in its eye-catching structure, and by erupting at an average of once every thirty years.
The active volcano blesses the land as a major source for the area's hot springs.
Conifers, broadleaf trees and other common vegetation form the primitive forest landscape.
With the local fauna well adapted to the forest environment, brown bears, foxes, the red squirrel, black woodpecker, and Scops owl can be found here.
Lake Shikotsu is renowned not just for its splendid natural beauty, but for being Japan's northernmost non-freezing lake.

"History of Jigokudani Valley (Hell Valley)"
Mt. Kuttara, whose central crater holds Kuttara Lake, resumed volcanic activity in its western foot at the beginning of the Holocene era (dating from some 10,000 years ago to the present).
Thousands of years of repeated Phreatic explosions (those involving water, mud, steam, and other components) produced the now-visible geographical features of Jigokudani Valley,
with high volcanic energy in the form of magma believed to be stored underfround.
Still today, gas and hot water actively pour throughthe area's natural vents.

It is the site of an explosion crater with a diameter of about 450 meters and an area of about 11 hectares formed by the eruption of Mt. Hiyori.
There are many springs and fumaroles along the valley, and it is called "hell where demons live" because of their boiling appearance.
A wide variety of hot springs, up to 10,000 tons per day, gush from here, and supply hot water to hotels and inns in the hot spring town.

支笏洞爺国立公園「登別地獄谷」

”誕生"
1949年に誕生。公園区域は99.473ヘクタール、支笏湖、洞爺湖の二大カルデラ湖に、羊蹄山、有珠山、樽前山など様々な形式の火山や火山地形を見ることができます。
また多種多様な温泉や硫気の吹き出す地獄現象などの火山活動が多く見られます。
特に有珠山は約30年間隔で噴火を繰り返し、火山特有の景観形成と温泉という恵みを与えています。
代表的な植生は針葉樹と広葉樹の混交する森林植生で、原始的森林景観を形成しています。
動物も森林環境に適応する種類が多く見られ、ヒグマ、キタキツネ、エゾリス、クマゲラ、コノハズクなどを見ることができます。
支笏湖は不凍湖としても有名です。

"地獄谷の歴史"
俱多楽湖を中央火口とする俱多楽火山は、完新世（約 1 万年前から現在まで）に入ると西麓で再び活動を始め、数千年にわたって水蒸気爆発などを繰り返し、地獄谷一帯の地形をつくりました。
日和山の噴火によってできた直径約450m、面積約11haの爆裂火口跡です。渓谷沿いには多数の湧き口や噴気孔があり、沸き立つ様子から「鬼の住む地獄」と呼ばれています。
この地下には高温のマグマが生み出す巨大な火山エネルギーがあると考えられており、ここからは1日1万トンもの多種多様な温泉が湧き出しており、温泉街のホテルや旅館に給湯しています。
