The Kittiwake is a characteristic bird of Ekkerøy. This gull nest only in colonies in cliffs or at walls of sea houses.
There is about 20 000 pairs of nesting Kittiwakes in the Ekkerøy bird cliff.
The Kittiwake retrieves food for their young at sea. The male and the female both contribute to the brooding and feeding of the chick.
During winter they live at open sea, and come ashore in Match to nest.
Local people have through hundreds of years collected eggs from the bird cliff here.
In the earlier days it was a competition to collect the most eggs, and some collected up tp 300 eggs a day at the most.
The eggs were mainly sold to the restaurants. Today there are not many who collect eggs.
Kittiwakes from Ekkerøy are recovered in New Foundland in Canada.
