Prodigiously talented American icon, Leonard Bernstein, was a world- renowned conductor, composer, pianist, music educator, author, and humanitarian. As director of the New York Philharmonic, he compiled a legacy of audio and video recordings. He composed symphonic and orchestral music, ballet, film and theater scores, choral and piano works, chamber music, and operas. The 1957 musical, West Side Story, is arguably his most well-known work, and it continues to be performed regularly around the world. While the storyline originates with Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the bard might not recognize these excerpts, which range from sweet to sassy, urgent to cool jazz. They include I Feel Pretty; Maria; Something’s Coming; Tonight; One Hand, One Heart; Cool; and America.
