In permaculture design, gardens can take many shapes. Linear gardens, curves and spirals are all possible, but the ladder often has the potential of creating more space efficiency and can be inspired by patterns in nature. By incorporating the ‘edge effect’ we can grow lots of food in a small space.

Keyhole garden beds are shaped in a way to allow us to reach every inch of our garden without having to step on and compress our garden bed. The size of your keyhole bed should be your arm’s reach, as likely you will be the one maintaining it and harvesting from it.

If you Google ‘Keyhole Garden Beds’, you will see many ways of making them, some with integrated composting systems that will add boost to your harvest, although my version of these incorporate just the Keyhole shape, thus reducing footpath space from 50% to 30%, and allowing an additional 20% for planting and harvesting. Not too bad, I would say.
