Anne Hidalgo, mayor of Paris, the city that is to host the upcoming Olympic Games, swam on Wednesday in the Seine to assure the cleanliness of the river ahead of the Olympic competitions.

Accompanied by Tony Estanguet, president of the Paris 2024 Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Hidalgo said that the water was in "rather optimal conditions."

A vast engineering project, costing some $1.5 billion over the past several years, has stanched the flow of sewage and industrial waste into the Seine.

The opening ceremony for the Paris Olympics is on July 26.

Several Olympic events — including the triathlon and two 10-kilometer swimming events — are to be held in the river, as well as the opening ceremony involving a flotilla of boats carrying thousands of athletes to take place on it.
