The 8th edition of the Waff Women's Championship kicked off this Monday in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia with 2 exciting matches.
For the opener, Lebanon managed to turn the table around and defeat Guam in a thrilling match, while the hosts, Saudi Arabia, fell short against the reigning champions and lost 3-0.
Trailing 2-0 early on in the game following Rebecca Bartosh’s brace, Lebanon’s hopes of an opening win seemed to be vanishing. The team seemed lost with an excessive number of missed passes.
However, in the second half, Lebanon dominated and managed to equalize thanks to its all-time top scorer Layla “Lili” Iskandar, and the 18-year-old Christy Maalouf.
the “Cedars” were even close to scoring the third but Iskandar, Maalouf, and Bourada missed their respective chances. And with 6 minutes to go, Mariah Anaya found herself one-on-one against Lebanon’s goalkeeper and put Guam in the lead 3-2.
Iskandar, who plays with Ittihad club in the Saudi Women’s Premier League, wasn’t finished.
In under 5 minutes, she produced an unforgettable Remontada.
In the 88th minute, she scored from a direct freekick on the edge of the box, before sealing the win 3 minutes into stoppage time. With this hat trick, Iskandar increases her goal tally with the Lebanese Women’s National Team to 12
