Ropes, electrical cables and hoses can often get tangled and kinked after they've been coiled up. Here is a method of hanging a garden hose on a simple bracket to minimise the risk of tangle when you want to use the hose in a hurry.

My sea-faring brother told me that this method of coiling a cable is called a 'French coil'. It is a method you have to use if coiling stiff wire cable by hand, but it is also a great idea if you have to coil a decent length of rope or an electrical lead.

If this way of storing a garden hose appeals to you, you don't need to have a hanging bracket exactly like mine. But you do need to hang your hose on something that will allow the hose to pull off the hanger easily.... thus the common hose brackets with a front 'wall' or hook are not ideal. You can still coil the hose using the French coil method which should minimise tangles once all the twists are out of the hose, but if you want to extend the hose quickly, you might be better off to lift all the hose off the bracket and lay it on the ground with the working end uppermost (and then lay it in such a way that the top coils don't get caught by the lower coils as you pull on the hose).
