The piggyback perm is created with a wrapping technique where sections of the hair are rolled using two perm rods for every carved-out section, with one rod placed on top of the other. A smaller rod is usually placed at the base, and a slightly larger one on top; sometimes, depending on the client's preference, the same size curler can be used.

The piggyback perm is mostly favoured by someone with long, heavy hair. This method ensures a uniform curl from root to end on longer hair, as the rods are piggybacked on top of each other, instead of the long hair being placed on one curler. Splitting the rolled sections into two curlers ensures even penetration of the perm solution, resulting in even curl formation.

The piggyback wrapping technique is very different from other perms. It can be more time-consuming and somewhat challenging but offers a natural curl pattern with lots of bouncy curls, especially on thick, long hair.

The Root Perm and the Piggyback Perm: Same Wrapping Technique, Different Approach.
What is a root perm? A root perm is used when someone with long hair has an old existing perm with straight roots but lots of curls at the ends. The goal is to refresh the roots without damaging the length of the hair and the existing curls. The root perm wrapping technique is identical to the piggyback perm, but the key difference lies in how the perm solution is applied.

In the piggyback perm, the solution is applied to both curlers, while in the root perm, the solution specifically targets the roots, focusing on the curler closest to the scalp, which should be wound to accommodate the regrowth area, whether it be 4 or 5 inches. The second curler towards the ends is left untouched. During rolling, it's common to spray the ends of the second roller with conditioner to shield them from the solution. This method concentrates on re-perming the roots, considering the hair regrowth area closest to the scalp rather than the length of the hair.
