Elizabeth Austin is an architect, designer, and artist living in Brooklyn, New York. Having worked for several years in the fields of architecture and interior design, she is now pursuing a Master's Degree in Disability Studies at CUNY School of Professional Studies, with a research emphasis on autistic-friendly spaces.

This conversation was such a delight! In it we talk about the impulse many neurotypical designers have to make minimalist spaces that bland and devoid of color and objects in a misguided attempt to decrease sensory overwhelm for autistic people. But as it turns out, as Elizabeth notes, color, decor, and other interior design choices are information and forms of communication that can be deployed in ways that quickly and effectively introduce and orient us to a space, its inhabitants, and its purpose.

We also talk about everything from how to know what to do when you first walk into a restaurant, to how to navigate grocery stores (color-coded aisles anyone?), to how to curate your nightstand so you remember to take your medication!

While Elizabeth is primarily focused on autism and the built environment, this interview will also be interesting and informative to ADHD and other neurodivergent folks!
