Maya is Ishwara's (God's) creative power, through which the whole creation has manifested. Maya has two powers - that of delusion (veiling) and illusion (projection or superimposition). Maya is constituted of all three Gunas - Satva, Rajas and Tamas.

Once Devarshi Narada goes to Lord Krishna and enquires about Maya. Lord Krishna takes him for a walk. While doing so, they pass through a desert and Lord Krishna feels very thirsty. He asks Narada to fetch water. Narada goes out in search of water and reaches a well where he sees a beautiful princess. Instead of getting water for Lord Krishna, Narada follows her to the palace where he asks the king if he could marry his daughter. He gets married, is crowned as king, but the kingdom comes under attack. He and his family are forced to flee, resulting in the death of his family. Suddenly, Lord Krishna ‘wakes’ Narada.

The episode of "Upanishad Ganga" titled *Maya* explores the complex philosophical concept of maya (illusion) through the story of Narada, a sage known for his wisdom and devotion. The narrative illustrates how even the most learned individuals can fall prey to illusion and how only the knowledge of the Self can free one from its grip.

Key Insights:
1. **Nature of Maya**: Maya is described as a mysterious power that is neither completely real nor entirely false. It veils the truth and presents the impermanent world as if it were real. Maya causes the world to seem ever-changing, thus making it transient and illusory.

2. **Narada’s Experience**: Narada, who seeks to understand the nature of Maya, becomes completely absorbed in a life of worldly attachments and desires—marriage, family, and power. He forgets his true identity as a sage due to the overwhelming pull of Maya. This signifies how even the wise can be deluded by worldly pleasures.

3. **Karma and Illusion**: The episode shows how the cycles of happiness and sorrow, success and failure, are part of the illusory world. Narada's rise to a king and then his fall, along with his family, highlight the impermanence of material accomplishments.

4. **Maya's Power**: The episode portrays Maya as an incomprehensible force that makes the unreal seem real. It is like a dream or a magician’s trick, where the world appears solid and tangible, but it is an illusion.

5. **Realization and Liberation**: In the end, Narada is brought back to reality when Lord Krishna (an embodiment of divine wisdom) reveals that what he experienced was nothing but a dream—an illusion created by Maya. The realization of the Self and the impermanence of the world leads to liberation from this illusion.

Moral:
The episode teaches that Maya is the cosmic illusion that binds individuals to the material world and its transient experiences. Liberation from Maya comes through self-realization and knowledge of the eternal truth—*Brahman* (the ultimate reality). True freedom is attained by transcending the dualities of the world and recognizing the oneness of the Self with the divine. This highlights the need for spiritual knowledge and detachment from worldly desires to achieve liberation.
