Barbara Hannigan is a Canadian soprano and conductor, known for her performances of contemporary opera. Hannigan moved from her hometown of Waverley, Nova Scotia to Toronto at the age of 17, and began her studies at the University of Toronto, graduating with a Bachelor of Music in 1993 and a Master of Music degree in 1998. She continued her studies at the Banff Centre for the Arts, the Steans Institute for Young Artists at the Ravinia Festival, the Centre d'arts Orford, and the Royal Conservatory of The Hague.

Her passion for contemporary classical music began in her youth, singing her first world premiere at the age of 17. By 2011 she had premiered approximately 75 contemporary compositions. Encouraged by her peers, Barbara began combining her talents as both an orchestral conductor and soprano. Her album “Crazy Girl Crazy”, which featured her as both a singer and conductor, won the 2018 Grammy Award for Best Classical Solo Vocal album as well as Edison and Juno Awards. Barbara’s organization Equilibrium Young Artists focuses on mentoring young musicians around the world, and her recently created Momentum: our Future Now encourages other leading artists and organizations to support and mentor young professional musicians.
