Half of Kiev's area is covered by parks and gardens. It is one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe, the presumed date of foundation is 482 AD. Two sites are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List: St. Sophia Cathedral and Pechersk Lavra.
