Experience the powerful journey of the Diné people with "Shí Naashá" from my new album "Across the Desert: The Long Walk Home." This orchestral rendition of the traditional song, featuring the incredible talents of Kelsey Begay and Tex Chee, captures the spirit of resilience and homecoming.
After 4 years of imprisonment at Fort Sumner by the US Government, the Diné people were released to return home with the Treaty of 1868. Walking over 350 miles through the unforgiving desert, the people rejoiced when they saw our sacred mountain of the south, Tsoodził. Knowing they were finally near the ancestral homelands, the Diné people sang this song “Shí Naashá” which translates to “I’m going/walking” (to freedom/our homeland)
Special thanks to Kelsey, Parker, and Harper Begay; Tex Chee; and Mary Beth Crandall for bringing this music and video to fruition
