Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks with visiting U.S. President Donald Trump at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Thursday morning.

Xi said cooperation is the "only correct choice" for China and the United States.

The two countries agreed to strengthen communication and coordination on issues including the Korean Peninsula and Afghanistan, according to the Chinese president.

Trump arrived in Beijing on Wednesday afternoon for a three-day state visit.

Prior to the meeting, Xi held a ceremony to welcome Trump, with a military band playing the national anthems of the two countries, and a 21-gun salute.

It is Trump's first visit to China since he assumed the U.S. presidency in January. He is the first head of state to visit China since the conclusion of the landmark 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China on October 24.
