I was a very young teenager when this song first appeared and I HATED IT! I mellowed somewhat over the years but I even surprised myself when I discovered that this version had made it into my all time top 10 most loved songs! So what changed? Well, I suppose it was a well constructed song to begin with and indeed it is still sung by Rod Stewart some 50 years on BUT just listen to the difference made by adding The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. It just works so very well and I love the controlled power. Because this is a recording session, we don't see the full 82 musicians - mainly the string and brass but we do hear them. My guess is that the layers were built up over 3 or 4 sessions. Anyway... TOP TUNE!
