This anvil is a wrought iron base with a steel face. The steel face is worn to the point where the wrought iron is showing through. Fixing the anvil requires machining the face flat and welding on a new face. It is a difficult machining job as the surface is hardened high carbon steel with variable hardness. I went though a few inserts as the interrupted cut and slag pockets in the steel/wrought iron interface ate them up.
