Stiltsville is a unique and historic community located in the shallow waters of Biscayne Bay, off the coast of Miami, Florida. It consists of several wooden houses and structures built on pilings above the water. The Stiltsville area has an interesting history dating back to the 1930s, when the first stilt houses were constructed. Initially, it served as a social and recreational retreat, attracting Miami's elite and various celebrities who enjoyed fishing, boating, and partying in this offbeat, secluded setting. At its peak, Stiltsville featured a collection of quirky bars, clubs, and private homes. The structures were built to be resilient to the conditions in the bay, but many have been damaged or destroyed over the years due to hurricanes and the natural elements. Efforts have been made to preserve the remaining structures, and today, some of the houses are managed by the National Park Service as part of Biscayne National Park. While you can't permanently reside in Stiltsville, the remaining structures are sometimes used for special events, educational tours, and as a testament to the colorful history of this unusual maritime community. Visiting Stiltsville requires a boat, as it is only accessible via water.
