On a slightly chilly spring morning I found myself standing in the rushing water of Blue Springs Creek. It was almost like going back to my old high school or driving my old truck. This was the creek of my youth. This is where I cut my teeth as a novice fly angler and failed so many times. This blue ribbon gem is just a stone's throw from St. Louis Missouri, and it has a tendency to see a lot of traffic. I highly recommend losing a few hours of sleep and being the first one on the stream. There is not a lot of room on this creek. But, in this instance being the “early bird” does not always guarantee the “worm”. You have to work for it. I can remember many many days trying to trick the weary rainbow trout that naturally occur in these waters. With it being a very small creek and highly pressured the fish have a keen and wary eye. Stealth would not be an issue today however. We had recently received a few massive Midwest gully washers and the water was still running high and stained. I was really worried that conditions were going to be too blown out to actually get on a consistent bite. But using what I had learned throughout the all years, really helped me to navigate the water and find the fish. I managed to catch three of the biggest wild rainbow trout I have ever seen come out of this creek. The high water and aggressive approach had everything to do with it. When the water is stained and high, it is a time of plenty for these Missouri wild trout. They just put the feed bag on. I was catching fish that were busting at the seams of their bellies because they were so gorged. You Missouri fly guys know what I’m talking about, this is not the normal outing.
