A couple notes. There is no oxygen in a propane tank until the tank is breached by the valve being removed. As such there is no chance of propane inside the tank combusting until it is opened.

If the tank has gas in it still when you press the brass ring it will come hissing out! At that point give it to your neighbour for a few weeks for his BBQ until it is completely empty.
