Live maps in cars, ships and aircraft have made a huge difference in how we get from A to B. There are a multitude of products on the market for all transportation modes. Two of the most popular auto GPS mapping apps are Apple Maps and Google Maps.

At the risk of angering devoted Apple fans, I show why I use Google Maps most of the time. Address lookup is more complete and reliable. This is very odd, as Apple uses Google for search functions. I much prefer the Google Maps satellite view over what Apple calls satellite view on CarPlay. Strangely, on the iPhone, the satellite views are essentially identical. I find that Google voice recognition works better for me than Siri, the Apple version. Finally, Google Maps does a better job of putting potentially ambiguous voice requests into context and displaying an intended result.

You may prefer Apple Maps or Waze, and that's perfectly OK. Apple Maps has some features that Google is missing. Regardless of what you choose, it's a world of difference over paper maps and asking strangers for directions!
