Lt. Col. Charles Hammett was a pilot with the famous 8th Air Force, 364th FG in the Army Air Corps. He would fly what most would consider the best fighter plane of World War II, the P-51 Mustang. Born in Atlanta, Georgia he would travel to England as one of the 'Old Guys' to fight in the war torn skies above Europe in 1944. Here he would encounter German ME-109's, anti-aircraft fire and see bombers disintegrate as they were hit. He would face the famous German fighter group, "The Abbeville Kids" and go up against the first jet fighter the world would see. He would log over 325 hours in the P-51 and earn a Distinguish Flying Cross. Later in his career he would be a test pilot for numerous aircraft including the XP-84. Col. Hammett would honorably serve his country for 25 years in the military.
