If all you wanted from a Super Mario movie was a huge gallery of video game references, this was an enjoyable film. If, on the other hand, you wanted the film to do something with those references, to craft a story with them that could kick off a Nintendo Cinematic Universe, the film is a big disappointment. It is, essentially, a big box of memberberries -- and plenty of people have forgotten that that is supposed to be a criticism, not a point of praise.
