Gun dog retrieving drills are essential when developing a gun dog. We use multiple different kinds and variations, but our favorite by far is the trailing memory. This gun dog drill allows you to increase distance of your retrieves, build steadiness, and get the dog to understand that not every retrieve comes from us throwing something. Trailing memory gun dog drills also get a dog to trust us that when we line them out, there is something to retrieve at the end.
What we see often is handlers will only throw marked retrieves, and the dog then stops and starts to hunt about the distance that the handler can throw the dummy. This drill is how we get past that and get gun dogs to take long true lines.
We hope you enjoy it, and this helps you add some gun dog retrieving drills to your arsenal!
