Looking for an easy woodworking gift idea? This little DIY hardwood glue-up key chain cell phone stand is an easy project and makes for a great stocking stuffer. You can pound out a batch of these keychain stands in a couple hours. I started by making a simple cell phone stand with plywood, which turned out really cool. But I love how the hardwood glue up ones turned out! See below for a cut list, tools and supplies used, and step by step directions.

STEP BY STEP DIRECTIONS ON CELL PHONE STAND

STEP 1: CUT STRIPS OF HARDWOOD TO SIZE
Cut strips to make a glue-up close to 1″ thick and 3 1/4″ wide. Note: I recommend making at least one of the outer pieces at least an 1 1/4″ wide so the dado goes thru the meat of the wood and not the glue for better integrity.
STEP 2: GLUE HARDWOOD TOGETHER
Glue strips together and let dry overnight. If you're new to glue-ups check out this post: Glue-Up Panels
STEP 3: SAND GLUE-UP
After the glue dries sand off the excess glue and make your glue-up smooth. I used a belt sander, but an orbital sander would work fine.
STEP 4: CUT DADO
The dado is 1/2″ deep and about 9/16″ wide. I made it wide enough for my phone to wiggle a bit. Of course everybody has different sized phones, but I think this size would work good for most phones. Note: If you don't have a router table you can make this dado on the table saw too.
STEP 5: CUT PIECES OUT
Set a stop block to cut pieces about 3/8″ thick. Miter saw would work great for these cuts too.
STEP 6: DRILL KEYCHAIN HOLE
Drill a small hole for Keychain wire. I used a chamfer bit to round off the edges.
STEP 7: SAND DOWN THE EDGES
Just a little sanding to soften up the edges.
STEP 8: LACQUER
Spray on a few coats of lacquer or polyurethane
STEP 9: ADD WIRE KEYCHAIN
BADDA BING!!
