A look at levels of resistance in corn earworm/cotton bollworm to the Bt toxins present in sweet corn and field corn in 2020. Sweet corn with older toxins needs to be sprayed as if it had no Bt. Sweet corn with the newer Vip3a toxin will not need insecticides for corn earworm control. In field corn the situation is a little better because corn earworm is usually not an economic pest. To preserve insect susceptibility to Vip3a it is important the growers follow the refuge requirements in the Stewardship Agreement.
