Chisholm Christensen (named after Jesse Chisholm), a 5th Generation Rancher and Montanan, gives us a unique behind the scenes look at what Ranching is really like in the 21st century. The Ranch started in 1909, where for 5 generations and over hundred years they have been raising cattle on the same land his great great grandfather homesteaded. Chisholm admits, "All of them figured out a way to be sustainable, so I guess it's my turn.

Ranching is more than just a job, its a lifestyle, a way of living. That life is often subject to factors outside of their control, where life and death are a daily reality. In the film we explore the themes of life and death, family, tradition, music, God, politics, and the future of Ranching.

We happened to be filming during tagging season, a time when cows are giving birth to their young. It is a fresh start to a new year. There really is no down time, while the camera crew was sleeping, the family was taking night shifts to monitor the herd and the new calves.

They all had plenty of stories to share about some years that were harder than others, and shared pictures of calves in the house to keep them warm during snowstorms and cold weather. Somehow though, they all rely on each other, and learn from the past generations. There is respect and pride in tradition and the past, but also a great excitement for progress in the future.

Hollywood's stories of the West are often over dramatized, skewed from reality. Nothing wrong with that in terms of entertainment value, just as long as we know there are real people out there, working cattle, caring for the land, and providing us beef for the dinner table. It's easy in this modern life to take it all for granted, especially when it comes trimmed and packaged from the grocery store.

The Truth About Ranching is a film to uncover the truths behind ranching. Many of us a far removed from such a life and remain curious about what really goes on behind the scenes. What is really running through the mind of those who are out there doing it?
