Venezuela has seen steady migration out of the country over the past eight years. Since 2010, approximately three million Venezuelans have fled the country. Described as the ‘largest migration and refugee crisis in the Western hemisphere in modern history’, it is one largely ignored by the world. This paper seeks to explore the nature of the exodus from Venezuela, and identify how and why it is not being viewed or declared a refugee crisis. The paper will also examine the impact of the crisis on the Venezuelan people, and the broader region and the role. Equally important, it will scrutinise the motivations of global powers in providing support and extending political recognition to one party or the other in the midst of a period of strong rhetoric surrounding migration and refugees internationally. Finally, it will look at how the crisis can be managed and why recognition is crucial to seeing a more effective global response. https://researchcentre.trtworld.com/p...
