As per Hindu Mythology, Janmajeya, the son of Parikshit had organised Yagya for Nagas to take revenge from the snakes and wanted to kill their entire clan because his father Parikshit was killed by Takshak snake. To protect all the snakes, the son of Rishi Jaratkaru and Aastik Muni stopped this Yajna. It was the day, when he stopped the Yajna was Shravan Shukla Panchami. He saved Takshak snake and his clan. Since then, Nag Panchami is celebrated
Nag Panchami holds an immense religious significance among Hindus. This festival is also celebrated in Nepal by Hindu devotees. It is believed that once Kathmandu valley used to be a lake which was occupied by dangerous snakes and people could not live there happily whenever they tried to do so they gave a special place to all the Nagas and started worshipping them to live peacefully. Since then, Nag Panchami is celebrated with great happiness and zeal.


On this auspicious day, devotees get the opportunity to have a glimpse of Nag Chandreshwar at Mahakaleshwar Temple situated in Ujjain. This temple is opened for the devotees just for 24 hours once in a year.


A large number of devotees also visit Mansa Mata temple, which is situated in Haridwar. It is also believed that people who are suffering from Kaal Sarpa Dosha, must visit this place to get rid of this Yoga.
