Every year, more people across the United States experience worsening climate disasters, as home insurance markets exhibit a mounting crisis as premiums rise or entirely communities are unable to access insurance. Media and policy makers have been covering this crisis, but have not offered analysis and solutions that address the core issue: how we ensure safe, accessible, and affordable housing in a time of growing climate change-driven disasters?

To start to answer this question, Climate and Community Institute released, “Shared Fates: A Housing Resilience Policy for the Home Insurance Crisis,” in September, 2024 examining the growing home insurance crisis in the US.

This webinar on October 2, 2024 features organizers, state legislators, and researchers discussing the state of the home insurance crisis and share policy visions to provide protections for homeowners and renters, meet the moment of a rapidly changing climate, and contribute to climate solutions rather than to the climate crisis.

The panelists include:
Moira Birss, Climate and Community Institute
Rep. Angela Nixon, Florida House of Representatives
Rep. Anna Eskamani, Florida House of Representatives
Afifa Khaliq, SEIU Public Employees of Florida
Julia Nerbonne, Minnesota Interfaith Power and Light
Seana O'Shaughnessy, Community Housing Improvement Program (CA)
