As an artist, it is important for creative growth not to allow ourselves to stay stagnated in routine for very long. In this video, I challenge myself to explore a different approach to my painting than I would normally do. Instead of starting on a light colored or white canvas, I decided to tone my canvas a deep burgundy red color. Colors applied on top of such a deep and rich color look very different than colors applied to a light background. It was a fun and challenging experiment, and I ended up pleased with the final outcome. The deep, rich jewel tones exude a warm and exciting energy. Painting on a dark surface challenged the way I perceive color, value and color temperature.

Colors I used were:

quinacridone magenta
Ultramarine blue
Hookers green
Green gold
Payne's gray
Cadmium yellow medium,
Titanium white
Unbleached titanium

Tools I used were a Princeton brand Catalyst silicone wedge and a #10 filbert brush. I also used glazing liquid as a medium to create transparency and viscosity to my paint.
