A quick video on how to program your Motorola APX radio (both portable and mobile) for TMS or Text Messaging Service. This will work for APX8000, APX6000, and so forth and so on. In here I also show you how to create a Unified Call List, which is really handy for Model II radios that cannot key in a radio ID to message.

1. Open APX CPS, get your codeplug loaded
2. Get into Radio Wide, set your Soft ID & Username, Alias, PIN (under User Information section)
3. Under Menu Items, add TMS from the Available list
4. In Data Wide set the Subscriber IP and Peer IP - these must be different! Set Peer IP to Dynamic from the dropdown. Check the Direct TMS Content Display box as well
5. Set up some Quick Text Messages in the list (if you don't have a full keypad or want some standard messages to send)
6. Set up a Data Profile, and set it to Conventional. Set the Packet Data Mode to one of these:
--Direct for those without fixed network equipment
--FNE for those with fixed network equipment
--Trunking for those with a trunking system
7. Also check the Auto Generate IP Address & Auto Generate Target IP Address boxes
8. Edit your P25 Conventional System and check the Message box, check the CAI Data Registration box, and then select Text Messaging Service as Unlimited, unless you don't have a full keypad, select List Only
9. Set up your Unified Contact List (UCL) unless you wanna free type radio IDs to send messages:
--Add Your contacts to the list
--Select the contact, click that blue folder to open the contact
--Add the ASTRO Conventional IDs, MDC IDs, etc.
--Repeat for each contact you created
10. Profit!
