The second suite is one of Bach’s most immediately appealing keyboard works, and throughout the earlier part of the twentieth century it was performed and recorded more frequently than any of the remaining five suites on both the piano and harpsichord. Its relative popularity is due to its magnificent and fiery Prelude, emotionally charged Sarabande (with a particularly affecting set of "agréments"), charming Bourrées, and a tarantella-like Gigue which, as Bach clearly indicates, is to be performed three times rather than the
customary twice. In the most reliable sources, the "agréments" for the Sarabande consist only of an ornamented soprano line, without the lower voices. In merely collating the ornamented version with the lower voices of the unembellished text, the published editions create occasional clashes that are probably unintended. These have been corrected in the present recording (both Levin and Curtis), in which the "agréments" are heard at the repeats.
