A common misconception is that you need to have a surf rod in order to fish from the beach. The truth is, you can catch a lot of fish with whatever rod you have, you just may have to pick your days a little more carefully.

In this video, we show you how you can surf fish with a shorter 6 to 7 ft rod using the two most popular styles of surf fishing, spiked fishing, and active (artificial lure fishing). Watch along as I demonstrate that you can still pretty easily toss out a good amount of weight to a spot a good way from the shoreline with a smaller rod, meaning you don't have to invest in an exclusive surf fishing set up to enjoy the hobby.
