I CAN’T BELIEVE WE DID THIS!!! Climbing the East Buttress on Mount Whitney has been on our bucket list since we first did the main trail on Whitney 3 years ago. We found out a few of our friends were interested in the same thing, so we all decided to ditch the Lake Tahoe crowds on the Fourth of July, and climb to 14,000 feet (twice) instead!

We scored these permits just two weeks ahead of time (somehow managed to get all 4 released on the 5th and all 4 on the 6th), so prep was QUICK. We hiked up to Iceberg Lake on day 1 and this video doesn’t quite show how brutal it was. On day 2, the boys climbed Fishhook Arete (5.9 8 pitches) and the girls headed up the 3rd class East Ridge of Mount Russell and we all met at the top!

Day 3 was Mount Whitney day!! We climbed 8 pitches of 5.7 climbing on the East Buttress Route, and about 3 pitches at the top of 3rd and 4th class scrambling. This route was exposed and by far the longest day we’ve ever had in the mountains. We are SO STOKED to check this off the bucket list, and it has us dreaming about what will be coming next…
