In this video we are exploring the rather obscure 2018 Moscow-Constantinople schism within the Orthodox Church and its effects on the politics of Eastern Europe. It was caused by the decision of the ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew I., to grant autocephalous (the right to self-governance of a church) to the newly formed Orthodox Church of Ukraine.
Until then, Ukraine was recognised by all other recognised Orthodox Churches to be under the jurisdiction of the Russian-Orthodox Church. This event has not only impacted the adherents of Orthodoxy in Russia and Ukraine, but will also influence the politics of the entire region.
