Here we look at exposure blending and how it can be used to create believable high dynamic range images in Photoshop. So often, as photographers, we are faced with combining photos with different exposures or brightness values. HDR software that automatically combines those photos is a great option. But doing it manually in Photoshop with masks and layers provides greater flexibility and often yields more realistic HDR results.

This tutorial / demonstration is for Photoshop users who already know their way around the software. Some of the techniques - although simple, do require a certain level of knowledge.

With that being said this technique with involves using the "apply image" command and applying two masks to one layer is truly powerful and a great asset to any photographer or photo editor.

I really hope this technique becomes a useful part of your workflow. It's ideal for landscape photography, architectural/real estate photography and basically any genre where a single frame doesn't cleanly capture all the highlights and shadow details in one shot.

The example I use is a waterfall I photographed in New Zealand, but the subject is incidental. Any subject that needs to combine several exposures into one will work.

If exposure blending isn't for you, Aurora HDR does a great job without the hard work... you can use ATSKY10 as a discount code at the following link: https://bit.ly/best_HDR
