One of the most popular folk songs in Slovakia. It was usually sang by the recruits. According to old slovak military tradition, every young man had to serve in military for 2 years. This tradition is 200 years old. It have enriched the slovak folklore with music, but it even enriched the traditional dress in most of the slovak regions and villages, by: black boots ,decorations on pants and some of vests and coats. During the WW2 this song got to Ukraine, by the Slovak soldiers who have treated the local people with respect. The Ukranian people seen the slovaks as liberator from the soviet tyranny. The Ukranians memorized all the good things including melodic songs of the slovak soldiers. In present day Ukranian army uses the song as a symbol in fight against the russian invador.
The song is in ´´novouhorský´´ style. This style was created from the ´´old style´´ which now only exists in the Northern parts of Slovakia (Kysuce,Orava,Liptov,Šariš,Zemplín,Spiš) and small part of southern Poland. The ´´novouhorský´´ style never got to these regions (Orava, Kysuce,Zamagurie(Upper Spiš)). The parts of ´´old style´´ and military songs (´´verbunky´´) with help of gypsy musicians have created the ´´novouhorský style´´, which later have spread in all of Hungary. New music styles as Chardash have enriched culture of old Hungary and it even got to Slovak Moravia (´´Slovácko´´). This song is perfect example of the ´´novouhorský´´ style.
