Today we archive a game that is very special to me for a particular reason. My real name is Max and when I was born I was gifted a book called "Max and the Maximonsters." Or as it is known in English: Where The Wild Things Are.
I have always loved this book and own various copies of it in multiple languages. In 2009 a movie was made by Spike Jonze and to my surprise a game was made too. I never knew that a Where The Wild Things Are game existed until I recently started looking for older Xbox 360 games. There are multiple versions, but for this video and archive I managed to get a copy of the Xbox 360 version.
We play as Max who arrives on a mysterious island inhabited by large creatures. At first they are not too friendly, but it won't take long until we become the best of friends. The game itself plays as a mix between a platformer and an action game. The controls are a bit stiff sometimes which can result in jumping into a direction you did not intend to. The action also sometimes gets a bit repetitive, but the atmosphere and overall feeling of the game is great.
The real star of the game are the Wild Things and luckily you always get accompanied by one or more of these cuddly giants. They each offer different abilities and though the game does not excel in anything, it has a pretty good pace and variety on what is expected of you each time. I was very happy to archive this game as it felt like archiving a part of my childhood.
