On the south side of Douglas harbour in the Isle of Man is a Victorian building housing some extraordinary machinery. Built in 1895, the mechanisms in the building provided the power to swing the bridge that spanned Douglas harbour to allow shipping to pass.
Although it hasn't been used for some years the machinery is still all there, though rarely seen by the public. In this short video, originally made in 2005, Charles Guard explains how it all worked.
The video is an extract from a longer programme called The Curiosities of the Isle of Man and was originally made for Culture Vannin and explores many fascinating and unusual aspects of the Island.
