One of the easiest cruise money-saving tips is to book a guaranteed cabin. Also known as having the cruise line pick your cabin, these accommodations are often the cheapest on a ship.

But, they are only sometimes the most economical. Plus, these staterooms are the only suitable option for some cruisers.

Staying in an inside stateroom is one of the easiest cruise tips to save money. But, we know only some people want to spend a week in those smaller accommodations. However, this money-saving cruise tip works on a variety of cabin categories.

So, saving money on a cruise and staying on a balcony or mini-suite is possible. Booking a guaranteed cabin on a cruise ship ensures you have at least that category room. Sometimes, you can even get an upgrade. Or get a more preferred cabin in that category, perhaps one at a better ship location.

Not to mention, when you opt for this type of stateroom, you always have the option to upgrade. You can use this option if your cruise line offers an upgrade bidding system. We booked guaranteed cabins and used these auctions to get better staterooms at a fraction of the cost.

Plus, when you get a guaranteed cabin, you are still entitled to all of the perks of that class. Whether it is special access to exclusive amenities, venues, or upgraded cabin finishes, you can still get all those add-ons even if you opted for the cruise line to pick the cabin for you.

But a guaranteed cabin isn't for everyone. Over-planners who want to know the exact location of their cabin should opt for something other than this booking selection. Further, those with mobility issues or concerns about being far from specific areas of the ship should stick with selecting a particular cabin. Likewise, those prone to motion sickness should not consider these staterooms; we have stayed in guaranteed cabins far from the elevators and all the way ahead or forward.

Not to mention, some cruise lines impose more restrictions on these types of cabins. Even if you want to save money on a cruise with Virgin Voyages, their lowest fares do not allow changes. Further, Norwegian Cruise Line's sail away rates don't qualify for the Free at Sea promotion. Opting for a different cruise fare could be better, as it comes with freebies like a drink package and onboard WiFi.
