It is known for its Chinese American community in the island of Oahu, the neighborhood is one of the oldest Chinatowns in the United States, which was first established in 1900.

During the 1900's, laborers were improted from China to work on sugar plantations in Hawaii and many of them became merchants in the area. Several fires have taken place in Honolulu's Chinatown during the early 1900's due to controlled burning of plague infested rats. Today, Honolulu's Chinatown has become a tourist attraction and a major destination for locals especially the famous Maunakea Marketplace located on Maunakea Street and the Oahu Market located on King Street.
